  1. Excellent review of a great movie. The cast is uniformly strong, but I want to give special mention to Thomas Mitchell, who won the Supporting Actor Oscar that year for his performance as Doc Boone. He had a great year in 1939 in general, since he also appeared in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Only Angels Have Wings, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and (of course) Gone with the Wind.

    And also Yakima Canutt, who performed the two great stunts (the Indian jumping onto the lead horse and then falling and being dragged under the stage, and doubling for John Wayne jumping from horse to horse), which are two of the most incredible stunts I’ve ever seen.
