  1. As possibly the only film fan in the USA who couldn’t stand this movie; I must respectfully disagree with your assessment. I did find the flick way too sweet, way too cute, and preachy ad nauseum. Have never understood all the fuss about the “classic” status of this particular film and all the raves for Capra. I can think of only one Capra film that I ever really liked–“Pocketful of Miracles” (and maybe “Lost Horizon”). Everything else was just too sappy…not my cup of tea (too much sugar in it doesn’t help the medicine go down). Now I suppose I’ve really ticked off many folks…sorry!

    • Ken, I’m sure you’re not the only one who feels that way. Sometimes I feel that if it had been anything but the Capra/Stewart mash-up, it may have been too sappy for me as well. I’m a happy sucker for their work together.

  2. I also found the balance just right. I like how you mentioned the wonder he has with Washington as that was a big draw for me as well.
I don’t know if you are a West Wing fan at all, but they did a great tribute to this called the Stackhouse Filibuster.

    • I’ve always been mildly curious about checking out West Wing, but have never put it at the top of my list. That could give me the right push, thanks Ian.
